What reaction do you normally get when you tell people that you are a film maker ? In my experience the vast majority of people give you this blank look followed by a half hearted : "oh, thats... thats good man".
Its a shame that every one has to see shit before they can start beliving in it.

I think it could be cos of 2 things..
- by using the word 'filmmaker' you are vaguely stating an entire field, the details of which are pretty unknown to most. If you said director/editor/cinematographer/sound recordist whatever then you're being specific, and giving them something which they can develop the conversation from, even if its just to say "what's that?".
- they likely think you're talking about your occupation, rather than your hobby. If you don't earn your living or a substantial chunk of it through filmmaking, it's your hobby. That doesn't make it any less valuable, but it should be acknowledged. There's nothing wrong in being 'an out of work artist'....
Otherwise, they might think you're being pretentious. To the average person 'filmmaker' implies a maker of films, which to them means theatrical or TV films, not amateur shorts/features which will never reach the market so they have no idea even exist. I think few people have much of an understanding of the concept of filmmaking as a creative hobby.
Afterall, it's only fairly recently that filmmaking is becoming more available to the masses as a hobby rather than just to the elite as a profession, compared to say music which has been available to people to engage in as a hobby for much longer. Tell people you're in a band and they know automatically you either mean a mess about with your mates or a local band that maybe does gigs at pubs, local venues, maybe even some paid work etc. Tell people you make films on the other hand and they either think you work in the film/tv industry or make shitty handheld home movies with your little sister on your dads camcorder, there is no middle ground....
Anyways, it's probably no different a response than anyone who writes music, paints, sculpts etc gets though. People are ignorant in general, can't expect everyone to know about everything, just give them an opening to learn more through conversation, if they're still ignorant or condescending then fuck em, their opinion shouldn't matter.

Well, one of our productions has won a prize in a festival and was shown in the cinema.
(I won't tell 'em that I didn't write/direct it, but I sure as hell produced and acted in the darn thing. Hey, if it gets me girls.)
When someone says "So what do you do?" I usually say "Little."
It's accurate, and saves the hassle of explaining filmmaking, since it's usually 400 year old aunties or slack retards that come into the shop where I work.

of course if you throw out a b-list name, you get this even funnier look followed by " was that the guy that was in the movie with so&so in like 84?"
